Gardaí in Charleville investigating the death of an eight-year-old boy at his home are treating the death as "a tragic incident".

Gardaí in Charleville investigating the death of an eight-year-old boy at his home are treating the death as "a tragic incident".

It follows the discovery of the boy's body in a house on Harrisson Place, Charleville at around 10am this morning.

The area has been sealed off and a full technical examination is due to take place.

The services of the State pathologist's office have been requested and Dr Margaret Bolster is expected to attend the scene later.

The house has been cordoned off pending a full technical examination.

The body of the child remains at the scene and a woman, aged 43 and believed to be the boy's mother, has been taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.
