Smart Charge goes like a Bullet

Hellvelyn scorched into the Betfred Sprint Cup reckoning with a rousing victory in the Listed totepool Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes.

Hellvelyn scorched into the Betfred Sprint Cup reckoning with a rousing victory in the Listed totepool Beverley Bullet Sprint Stakes.

Last season’s Coventry Stakes winner has endured something of a turbulent campaign as a three-year-old, with injury restricting him to one racecourse appearance in the July Cup.

He still shaped with promise when eighth to Sakhee’s Secret last month and offered further justification behind Bryan Smart’s sky-high opinion of him with this towering display.

Dropping down to the minimum trip held no terrors for the flashy grey, who was patiently ridden by Ted Durcan towards the far side of the pack.

Borderlescott, agonisingly touched off in the Stewards’ Cup on his last start, skipped into the lead inside the last but again had to make do with second place as Hellvelyn slalomed down the centre to win by a short head.

Smart, whose sprinter returned at odds of 4-1, said: “He had a bad bruised foot so we had to go to a Group One (July Cup) without a run under his belt, which was not ideal.

“But he’s over those problems now and was always cruising.

“Six furlongs is his trip and next year I honestly believe we might have the next champion sprinter on our hands.

“Before that, this should have him spot-on for the Betfred.”

William Hill reacted to Hellvelyn’s return to the winner’s enclosure by cutting his price for the Haydock Group One on September 8 from 20s to 12-1.

Robin Bastiman, trainer of the luckless Borderlescott, was wistful in defeat and still has high hopes of a lucrative autumn campaign.

“He’s probably run into a really good horse and we can have no real complaints - he’s run his race again,” said the Wetherby-based handler.

“We’ll look at Ayr (Gold Cup) and then possibly the Prix de l’Abbaye as, unlike a few of them, he can go on that softer ground.”

Teslin plugged a gaping hole to a remarkably informative race at Newbury last year with a 33-1 shock in the valuable totesport.com Stakes over 10 furlongs.

Formerly with Mark Johnston, the recently-gelded three-year-old lowered the colours of Authorized and Aqaleem over a mile last September – his only other triumph on a racecourse.

But purchased for 65,000 guineas by Brian Ellison in May, Teslin cast aside his recent poor form to defeat Monte Alto by three-quarters of a length under David Allan, replacing the injured Tony Hamilton.

“He found seven furlongs too sharp at Goodwood on his first start for me but is a very talented horse and showed it here,” said Ellison, who won this race two years ago when Ashkal Way landed a major punt.

“He’ll now go for the Cambridgeshire and will probably have one more run before that.”

Mister Jingles is in the form of his life and recorded a third success in four starts when Hayley Turner made all the running in the toteexacta Handicap.

Winning trainer Richard Whitaker said of the 13-2 shot: “We were drawn well and he had his ground this time – it was too soft for him at Musselburgh.”

Johnston does particularly well on the Westwood and unveiled yet another promising newcomer in Jadaara, who fended off Badalona’s late rattle to take the EBF Speciosa Maiden Fillies’ Stakes at odds of 14-1.

“I wouldn’t say she’s been catching pigeons at home but she’s a nice, scopey filly,” reflected the Middleham handler.

Royston Ffrench was suspended for one day (September 5) for entering the wrong stall Lanterns Of Gold, while Hamilton was banned on September 6 for careless riding on Kalanda Kurl.

Allan was also hit with a one-day ban (September 6) for using his whip in the forehand position down the shoulder of Monasheemini in the first division of the totesportcasino.com Maiden Stakes, won by Midnight Sky (11-1).

Such a setback failed to dampen the spirits of Allan, who bagged his eighth winner at Beverley this season when Tim Easterby’s Royal Composer showed the way home in the second division of the maiden.
