Varadkar: Govt does not want to impose wage cuts

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar has said the Government does not want to impose any more cuts on public servants.

The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Leo Varadkar has said the Government does not want to impose any more cuts on public servants.

However, Mr Varadkar added that saving targets have to be set and if they are not met then the Government will have "no choice but to introduce further pay cuts".

His comments come ahead of a progress report on the Croke Park deal on public sector pay and reform which is due this month.

The report is expected to show that targets are being met and that public sector numbers fell by 2,500 to 3,000 in the first quarter of this year.
