A small group of protestors has gathered in Cork city this morning, for the announcement of 400 new jobs at Irish Water.
The new company has been tasked with the installation of meters at hundreds of thousands of homes across the country over the next three years.
Irish Water expects to start hiring immediately, as water meters are installed in homes across the country by the end of 2015.
The contract for the call centre has been awarded to Abtran, the company which recently operated the Local Property Tax helpline on behalf of Revenue.
The head of Irish Water says he hopes people will co-operate with the organisation as it starts the process of installing the water meters.
CEO of Irish Water, John Tierney, hopes people will realise the necessity of what is being undertaken.
Mr Tierney said: "It's a major infrastructural investment. It's about when we do introduce charging, being able to do it on the basis of usage which is a very fair way of actually implementing the system.
"So I hope we can work with people so that they can understand why this should and needs to be done."
