Cancer-related illnesses remain the most costly medical conditions for the VHI, according to figures released by the health insurer today.

Cancer-related illnesses remain the most costly medical conditions for the VHI, according to figures released by the health insurer today.

The company says it spent more than €144m on cancer treatments in the year to the end of February, with 73,300 claims being made.

The next most expensive treatments were for cardiac-related conditions, with €116m paid out in respect of 41,800 claims.

The VHI also says that the drug it spent the most money on during the year was Herceptin, which is used in the treatment of breast cancer.
