Progressive Democrats leader Mary Harney has revealed that some of her party’s new TDs would prefer to go into opposition rather than form a government with Fianna Fail.

Speaking in Dublin today, Ms Harney said her personal preference is a coalition with Fianna Fail, but not everybody in the PDs agrees with her.

“I’ve spoken to all the new deputies privately over the last couple of days, tomorrow we’ll meet as a group,” she said.

“Some of them have taken the view that maybe we should remain in opposition because they see huge changes in the Irish political landscape and huge opportunities for a party like the Progressive Democrats.

"That’s a view that is being expressed. Clearly there’s an alternative view and I believe we sought a mandate to go back into office after this election, to go back into Government.”
