Nicole Kidman and Jennifer Lopez are to star in a new film set in the 1930s and 40s called American Darlings.
Kidman has been keen to make the movie for years. It’s about a white female swing band that joins forces with a group of black and Hispanic musicians. At the time the movie was set, women were barred from playing in clubs that were mainly frequented by men.
The sex barriers broke down in every area of life – including music – after President Roosevelt declared war on Japan and women started playing the hottest clubs in major US cities.
The film explores the racial and sexual prejudices of the era. It’s likely to be more of a drama than a straight musical, but there will be extensive singing from both stars.
The idea for the film came from Susan Baton, a Hollywood acting coach whose clients include Kidman.
