The proportion of children living in poverty in the North is more than twice that in Britain, according to a report published today by Save the Children.
The organisation says more than one-fifth of children in the North live in persistent poverty.
The worst affected are from families that depend mainly on benefits, families led by a single parent or families that have to look after a disabled adult or child.
Save the Children says long-term poverty badly affects the quality of childhood, schooling and physical and mental health, as well as future life chances.
