Age Action Ireland says is not surprised by the scale of abuse perpetrated against elderly people in Ireland.

Reports this morning say almost 1,000 cases were referred to the HSE's elder abuse services last year.

One-fifth of cases related to physical abuse, while 29% related to psychological abuse and 20% to financial abuse.

In 92% of cases, the alleged abuse was perpetrated by a family member.

Age Action Ireland says the problem is widespread and any instances of abuse should be reported to the HSE.
