Hurricane forces MTV to postpone awards ceremony

MTV has postponed its Latin America Music Awards ceremony in Mexico due to the approach of Hurricane Wilma.

MTV has postponed its Latin America Music Awards ceremony in Mexico due to the approach of Hurricane Wilma.

Wilma, the strongest hurricane recorded in the Atlantic according to the US Hurricane centre, was due to brush past the awards venue Playa del Carmen. MTV previously moved the show forward by a day, but then said it would postpone it indefinitely.

Colombian pop star Shakira is up for six nominations at the Latin America awards, including best female artist.

It is the second time this year that weather has hit one of MTV's shows. In August, Hurricane Katrina hurled wind and rain on the pre-ceremony festivities of the MTV Video Music Awards in Miami, although it did not interrupt the main show.
