Vodafone to launch 3G handsets

Vodafone today began its major push into the market for third-generation mobile phones with plans to launch 10 handsets before Christmas.

The group said it will begin selling the phones in November in a move that intensifies competition with rival telecoms firms such as 3.

The handsets will feature state-of-the-art technology which offers users improved quality, sound, pictures and video, as well as access to 3G games.

Models due to go on sale include the first 2 megapixel camera phone in Europe, which can take pictures at a higher resolution than those already on the market.

The launch of the 3G handsets marks the third milestone in the roll-out of its third generation mobile phone technology.

In April, Vodafone began selling 3G datacards, which offer internet connections to laptop users at seven times the speed of a fixed-line service.

This was followed by the launch of commercial 3G services via its Vodafone live! Technology in Germany and Portugal the following month.

No details were given on the prices of the handsets, which have been developed in partnership with manufacturers including Ericsson, Nokia and Motorola.

Chief marketing officer Peter Bamford said: “The planned launch of our new 3G handset portfolio represents a major breakthrough in terms of handset choice.

“It will also give consumers the opportunity to experience the enhanced range of Vodafone live! with 3G services, opening up a whole new world of communication and entertainment via the mobile phone.”
