Seizures of illegal fireworks have risen by over 500% since 2000.

Fine Gael's Justice Spokesman Jim O'Keefe has said urgent new powers for the gardaí are necessary and that an information campaign highlighting the injuries that arise from illegal fireworks should be launched.

He added that communities who wish to put on firework displays for occasions like Hallowe’en and New Year’s Eve should be permitted to do so once they obtain a licence from local gardaí.
