Independent Donegal TD Harry Blaney is expected to confirm today that he is standing down at the next general election.

Independent Donegal TD Harry Blaney is expected to confirm today that he is standing down at the next general election.

Deputy Blaney was elected to the Dail in June 1997 and is one of four independent TDs currently supporting the Government.

According to reports this morning Deputy Blaney will make a statement at the Independent Fianna Fail Convention being held in Donegal North-East today.

It has been suggested that his 27-year-old councillor son, Niall, will be nominated to contest the seat in the constituency.

The decision should focus attention on the three seater constituency as there has been speculation that Dana Rosemary Scallon would seek a seat there if Deputy Blaney should step down.
