More raids in assassination plot hunt

Belgian police have raided 11 houses as part of an investigation into the assassination of Ahmed Shah Massood, the military leader of the Northern Alliance.

The Brussels prosecutor's office said the raids were carried out to see if the two suicide bombers who killed Massood in September had been operating out of Belgium.

It was also reported that counter-terrorism police arrested two men in France in connection with the Massood killing and they are in custody.

One was in northern France, one in Paris.

Massood's killers were able to get close to him by posing as journalists, and were reportedly carrying Belgian passports.

Authorities believe the passports were stolen from a Belgian consulate in Strasbourg or its embassy in The Hague.

The Belgian raids followed the arrest in London last month of an Egyptian activist who has been charged with plotting to murder Massood.

Prosecutors allege the Egyptian, Yasser el-Sirri, used his London-based Muslim group to give fake media credentials to the two men who detonated a bomb hidden in their camera while they interviewed Massood in his northern Afghanistan headquarters.

Massood, the alliance's military chief was seen as the leader of the anti-Taliban struggle and a figure who might have played a major role in a post-Taliban government.
