A newborn baby found abandoned in the centre of Dublin was reunited with his mother today.

The full-term infant was found in a shopping bag at a bus stop in the capital early on Saturday afternoon.

The 7lb baby was wrapped in a beach towel and tinfoil and taken to the nearby Coombe Hospital, where doctors said he was in good health but appealed for his mother to come forward.

Gardaí said today she had contacted them and been reunited with her baby at the hospital.

They said the matter was being dealt with by the local health board and that no further details were available.
