More than 60 jobs are to go at a factory in Waterford, it emerged today.

Honeywell, which makes parts for the airline industry, announced it was relocating its software operations to India due to high costs here.

The US-based company said a total of 63 staff would be made redundant at the software division.

Honeywell is one of the world’s biggest manufacturers of aircraft engines and components, and employs 115,000 people in 95 countries.

The redundancies were described by Labour party TD Brian O’Shea as a “blow for the economy and the people of Waterford“.

“The immediate priority must be to maximise employment and help those affected by these cuts to return to the workforce,” the Waterford TD said.

“Sixty-three families face the prospect of a loss of income at a time when the cost of living is continually rising and employment is becoming harder to find.”

He said the Investment and Development Agency of Ireland had assured him it would continue to work with Honeywell to maximise employment in the town.
