LE Niamh rescues 125 people from the Mediterranean

Another 125 people have been rescued in the Mediterranean by the LE Niamh.

The Irish naval vessel was tasked to assist an overloaded inflatable craft in distress this afternoon - about 115 kilometres north west of Tripoli.

92 men, 26 women and 7 children were on board the craft.

They were taken on board and are receiving water, food and medical assistance.

The LE Niamh was then re-tasked to take on board another 375 people from the Italian vessel Mimbelli.

That operation is still ongoing.

So far the Irish naval vessel has rescued over 16 hundred people during its time in the Mediterranean.
