The country has been thrown into chaos after a day of severe storms.

Dozens of flights have been cancelled in and out of all airports and most ferries have been delayed.

Thousands of homes in the west are without electricity, Galway and Mayo being the worst hit.

Areas in Monaghan, Cork and Waterford have also been affected by flooding.

Rain and high winds have ripped through the country all day long.

However the weather is expected to ease somewhat by tomorrow.

Met Eireann said storms like this in December are unusual, as January and Febuary are usually the worst times of the year.
