Minister Bruton: Leaving Cert should be reformed

The Minister for Education has said the Leaving Cert needs to be reformed so it is less about a student's ability to memorise facts.

More than

58,000 students received theirresults this morning.

The results were available for collection in person this morning - but those wanting to check online will have to wait until midday.

Six people got eight A1s in this year's Leaving Cert exams.

Minister Richard Bruton says the Leaving Cert should be refomred to take different abilities into account:  “It's great strength as you know, it is entirely fair and objective, but it is entirely based on memory retention and there isn't enough valuing of wider ranges of experience.

“As you know we are moving now to introduce a junior cycle which will value a much wider range.

“So I think the logical direction as we embed that we move to similar forms at senior level.”
