The principal of the school attended by murdered schoolgirl Michaela Davis said she was a "lovely child who had so much to give and to live for".
Terry Allen, head of St Mochta's National School, said the thoughts and prayers of the whole school community were with Michaela's family at this "very sad and upsetting time".
He extended his sympathies to the family on their loss.
Local Fine Gael Councillor is Kieran Dennison said the whole community was still coming to terms with the situation.
"We are all appalled that something like this could happen to a 12-year-old child...It’s going to take a long time for people to get through this," he said.
