Navy divers are due to carry out a search of the seabed off the west coast today following the discovery of several kilos of cannabis in the area.

The discovery was made last Friday when a Killybegs-based trawler found at least eight kilos of the drug in its fishing nets.

Two further kilos were found in the water 60 miles west of the Aran Islands yesterday and divers from the LE Aisling are due to conduct a search today to see if any more packages are on the seabed.

Gardaí believe the drugs were dumped overboard from a ship that got into difficulty off the west coast 10 years ago.
