A breakthrough has been reached in the dispute between the Department of Agriculture and the Irish Farmers Association over farm inspections.

The IFA has been campaigning vigorously against plans to begin unannounced inspections for compliance with European directives.

It now says it has agreed an informal arrangement whereby farmers will be given 48 hours notice of any inspection.

Despite this, the association says it will continue to campaign for a 14-day notice period.
