The Department of Social and Family Affairs has claimed that social welfare spending is increasing at four times the rate of inflation.

The Department of Social and Family Affairs has claimed that social welfare spending is increasing at four times the rate of inflation.

The department said its spending had increased by 120% to €10bn over the past 10 years, while average prices had increased by just one quarter of that amount.

In 2003, more than 1.5 million people benefitted from social welfare payments.
