Talks are to begin in London on Monday to resolve the outstanding problems in the Northern peace process.
The discussions will move to Belfast later in the week in a bid to reach agreement on policing, decommissioning and other barriers to the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement.
However, two weeks ahead of David Trimble's self-imposed deadline for IRA decommissioning, the omens are not good.
The North's First Minister has already dismissed the talks, saying that all that is needed is for weapons to be handed over and that there is nothing else to negotiate.
Sinn Fein has counter-claimed that the British government has failed to deliver on its commitments under the Patten Report and demilitarisation.
