Delayed airline customers to be compensated

The Minister for Transport has given the Aviation Regulator new powers to force airlines to compensate passengers who suffer delay or cancellation.

The Minister for Transport has given the Aviation Regulator new powers to force airlines to compensate passengers who suffer delay or cancellation.

It will mean customers who feel a carrier has not provided adequate service can forward their complaint to the Commission.

It follows EU legislation which established common rules on compensation and assistance to air passengers.

Martin Cullen said today that it is about protecting consumers.

Mr Cullen said: "We have assigned the powers to the commissioner for aviation regulation who will be able to deal with a complaint directly from a customer and who himself will deal with the airline to make sure that the airline is properly looked after."
