ISPCC seeks legislation to ban slapping of children

The ISPCC is calling on the Government to introduce new legislation banning the slapping of children.

The ISPCC is calling on the Government to introduce new legislation banning the slapping of children.

The children's charity says physical punishment in the home must be outlawed to bring Ireland in line with 14 other European countries.

However, it says it does not want to see parents being criminalised and is recommending that special programmes be introduced with the new law to advise on alternative ways to discipline children.

Spokesperson Tess Monson said today that a ban on slapping would make a clear statement that Ireland values children's rights and is willing to place them on the same level as adults' rights.
