Motorists were warned this afternoon of extremely congested traffic both ways on the N9 Carlow to Dublin Road through Castledermot, but particularly northbound.

There were reports of delays of more than an hour and a half.

It is due to two separate sets of roadworks - one on the Carlow side of Castledermot at the Prumplestown Interchange where a stop/go system is in place each day, the other in Castledermot town itself - where resurfacing is underway until 6pm today.

To avoid delays, gardaí have advised motorists to use the N78 through Athy. However, there were also reports of busy traffic along that route, particularly in Athy.
