FG prepared to invite Greens into three-party coalition

Fine Gael is reportedly prepared to ask the Green Party to join a possible rainbow coalition after this year's general election.

Fine Gael is reportedly prepared to ask the Green Party to join a possible rainbow coalition after this year's general election.

Party leader Enda Kenny is quoted this morning as saying the approach will be made if the alternative government being proposed by Fine Gael and Labour wins up to 80 Dáil seats.

Mr Kenny says he would prefer to join forces with the Greens rather than the PDs if the two smaller parties had the seats needed to get a rainbow coalition into power.

Meanwhile, Fine Gael is also rubbishing speculation that the Labour Party might abandon their alliance in favour of a coalition with Fianna Fáil.

Fianna Fáil says it would be happy to link up with Labour in the next government if the two parties have the required seats.

However, Fine Gael Senator Brian Hayes says the remarks are an example of "Fianna Fáil spinning at their best".

"Not only do they realise that they're going to suffer many casualties at the next election, but that their current partner - Michael McDowell's PDs - is also unelectable at this stage," he says.

"So now they're casting their net to see can they get the Labour Party back on side."
