Up to 300,000 church records going back to 1900 are to be computerised by Dublin libraries in a major IT project.
The contract will involve baptisms, marriages and deaths data currently filed on paper index cards.
The successful IT firm will have to painstakingly computerise the records so that people can view them online.
The project will include all retrievable records filed on index cards since 1900.
Dublin City Public Libraries today invited IT firms to tender for the contract, which must be completed by November.
“The successful tenderer will be required to computerise the records in as timely and efficient a way as possible and to make the computerised records available to Dublin City Public Libraries in an acceptable format and to an agreed standard,” a spokesman said.
The closing date for interested parties to submit tenders is July 10.
Meanwhile the success of the Irish cricket team in the World Cup may have influenced plans to build a new cricket ground in Balbriggan in north Co Dublin.
Fingal Co Council today issued tenders for the construction of a six-pitch facility in the town.
