Ex Prime Minister wins Solvenia President vote
Former Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor has won the presidential election in the crisis-hit EU country with 67.3% of the vote, according to an exit poll.
The poll conducted by Mediana polling agency said that incumbent president Danilo Turk won 32.97% at today’s run-off balloting. Official results are expected later in the evening.
The vote was held amid growing discontent with the government’s anti-austerity measures and only two days after protests against those measures and alleged widespread corruption erupted in clashes.
Mr Pahor said Slovenia needs “trust, respect and tolerance.” The 49-year-old left-leaning politician added that “there is no problem that cannot be solved if we act together”.
He has supported some of the anti-crisis measures, unlike Mr Turk, who has been a fierce critic.
