The death toll in a bus accident in southern India has risen to 31 after 11 people died in hospital overnight.

The death toll in a bus accident in southern India has risen to 31 after 11 people died in hospital overnight.

At least 20 people died on Wednesday when their bus crashed head-on with an oil tanker and exploded on a highway in Coimbatore, 1,150 miles south of New Delhi.

Sixty people were on board the bus.

"All 31 have been charred to death," said G. Venkataraman, the area police chief. Included among the dead is the driver of the state-owned bus, he said.

Venkataraman said 10 people were being treated for burn injuries and another 15 for cuts and wounds.
