Northern Ireland set to honour Best

Northern Ireland could be set to stage a glamour game in honour of the late George Best.

It is intended that the proceeds of such a match would go to the charity chosen by the Best family.

Former Northern Ireland and Manchester United legend Best was buried on Saturday in his home city of Belfast.

The IFA's Jim Boyce has revealed they intend to honour the football icon both on and off the pitch.

He believes there should be a memorial erected to Best in Belfast.

Boyce said: “There are two things I would like to see happen. Northern Ireland should be involved in a major match where all of the proceeds would go to a charity of the Best family’s choice.

“The IFA also intends to sit down with council representatives to hold discussions on having a permanent memorial erected in Belfast in honour of George Best.

“Belfast has come out of very troubled times and a fitting monument to someone I think was the best footballer in the world should be erected in home city.”
