Public approve tissue research, says survey

A new survey claims most Irish people believe there is nothing wrong with their tissue being used for medical research but only with their consent.

A new survey claims most Irish people believe there is nothing wrong with their tissue being used for medical research but only with their consent.

The survey of more than 2,000 adults was carried out by the College of Surgeons on behalf of the Department of Health.

Almost nine out of 10 people say they'd be prepared to allow after-surgery surplus tissue be used for research, especially if it was for the benefit of a relative.

Three out of four say they'd be willing to donate organs after death for transplant, but only half would be willing to allow the tissue or organs of a dead family member be used.

The survey also finds that seven out of 10 people feel genetic research will lead to cures for many diseases but four out of five feel it’s tampering with nature.
