Bus drivers have abandoned their vehicles in Belfast to protest about the suspension of one of their colleagues.

There was traffic chaos in the city centre as lines of empty Metro buses parked up beside the City Hall.

Long queues formed at taxi ranks as passengers sought alternatives means of completing their journey.

Union bosses said the drivers took the action to support their fellow driver, who they insisted had been wrongly disciplined.

Union leaders hailed the action a success after receiving assurances that the Metro service driver had been allowed back to work.

They also apologised for the inconvenience to passengers stranded during the late-morning protest.
