Government spends €7.7m on jet travel

Government ministers travelling by private jet have clocked up a bill of €7.7m since the last election.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, tops the league-table of frequent flyers with more than 450 hours in the air since 2002, costing €2m.

The former Foreign Affairs Minister Brian Cowen came a close second while the Tánaiste Mary Harney has clocked up 300 hours.

At the bottom of the list, the Tourism Minister John O'Donoghue has barely got off the ground in three years - spending only 13 hours on board a government jet.

The largest government jet costs €5,500 an hour to operate.
