UL survey: Mothers our number one heroes

Katie Taylor may have lifted the spirits of a nation, but according to a new study mothers are still our top heroes.

Research carried out at the University of Limerick shows that the characteristics of parents, and mothers in particular, were those most cited by respondents when asked to describe their heroes.

Evidence of self-sacrifice and moral integrity were the qualities commonly attributed to heroes - those most often found in mothers.

A total of 189 people from 25 different countries participated in the study.
