The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, has welcomed Gerry Adams' decision to call a meeting of the Sinn Féin leadership tomorrow to push forward on the policing issue.

Mr Adams says he will use the meeting to propose a special Sinn Féin ard fheis where a vote will be taken on endorsing the PSNI.

The vote could then take place sometime in January.

Mr Ahern has described the potentially historic move as "an encouraging and significant development" which he hopes will "definitely and positively decide on the policing issue".

"A resolution of the policing issue by Sinn Féin in January will greatly help to build confidence and clear the way to the restoration of the Executive in March,'' he added.
