Six out of 57 hate crimes against transgender people reported to gardaí
Out of 57 known hate crimes against transgender people in the past three years, only six were reported to gardaí.
The Transgender Equality Network has released its 2014-2016 report which reveals the number of people who reported crimes to the network, as well as those who informed gardaí.
It is hoping that the report will lead to a shift in attitudes and encourage more people to report crimes against them.
Stephen O'Hare, CEO of TENI, said transgender people have had "a broad spectrum" of negative experiences.
"They range from everyday insults, abuse, noncriminal discriminatory and transphobic acts towards people and then right up to quite severe incidents - assault, aggravated assault. There are cases where people have been raped, cases were people have suffered quite severe harassment," he said.
