Henson has not played rugby for 18 months, going on unpaid leave from Welsh regional team the Ospreys.

In recent weeks though, the 28-year-old has expressed his desire to start playing again, and with a London club.

“Had Gavin Henson training with us this morning,” said scrum-half Wigglesworth.

“He looked sharp and keen to get back to his rugby. Hope the deal can get done.”

And wing Strettle said: “Henson did indeed train with Sarries today.”

Saracens’ South African fly-half Derick Hougaard is unlikely to play again this season after suffering an Achilles injury during the Heineken Cup clash against Leinster at Wembley nine days ago.

Saracens still need to reach an agreement with the Ospreys, who are likely to want compensation for any Henson move.

Henson is currently appearing on the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing series, a commitment that could last until Christmas.

“I don’t think there is an issue with his physical condition or his desire to play the game,” Saracens chief executive Edward Griffiths told Sky Sports News.

“We are in a process with Gavin, but we have some outstanding issues to resolve with the Ospreys.

“We will have further discussions tomorrow and with the BBC, as he is on Strictly Come Dancing and he will honour that commitment

“I don’t think we are a million miles away (from a deal). In sport, we all have the same goals, and if Saracens offer him the right environment to rediscover his form it would be good news for Saracens and Welsh rugby with a World Cup coming up.

“We met last week, and (Saracens rugby director) Brendan Venter asked him why he wanted to play and his first answer was the competitive nature of the game, which you have or don’t have.

“Gavin is competitive and wants to win Strictly Come Dancing, and we support him in that. We’ll see what happens.

“It’s beyond our control. It is a sign of the world we live in, but that’s the reality of it.”

Henson has won 31 caps for Wales and also toured New Zealand with the 2005 British and Irish Lions, playing in one Test.
