Favourite-backers got off to a good start at Ayr when Merchant Of Dubai, backed from 7-2 to 11-4, opened his account at the third attempt under Jamie Spencer in the EBF Join WBX.COM For £150 Free Bets Maiden Stakes.
Atabaas Pride struck the front approaching the final furlong, but Spencer brought the Alan Swinbank-trained winner with a sustained run to collar him close home and win by a neck.
The winner is owned by a 20-strong syndicate and originally having cost 135,000 guineas, was bought at the Breeze Up Sales for 21,000 guineas.
Syndicate spokesman William Powrie said: “He wasn’t travelling that well early on in the race, but Jamie said he wants a mile.
“We were reasonably confident, he had benefited from his first two runs and is the type of two-year-old who will train on.”
