Nicholls hoping for Punchestown magic

Paul Nicholls is hoping the faster surface at Punchestown will enable Twist Magic to return to his best in the Kerrygold Champion Chase on the opening day of the Festival meeting.

Paul Nicholls is hoping the faster surface at Punchestown will enable Twist Magic to return to his best in the Kerrygold Champion Chase on the opening day of the Festival meeting.

The champion trainer has a good record from his small but select team of runners at the fixture in recent years and landed the Guinness Gold Cup with Neptune Collonges last season.

While that one is going back for more on Wednesday, the Ditcheat maestro has two chances in the Kerrygold with Natal also travelling over.

Although Twist Magic has disappointed since his Tingle Creek win last December, Nicholls believes his lacklustre shows at Ascot and Cheltenham were down to unsuitable conditions.

"I know there is a question mark over Twist Magic after two disappointing runs but obviously it was too soft for him at Ascot and it was probably too soft for him at Cheltenham too," Nicholls told Teletext.

"He definitely acts on good, springy ground and Ruby (Walsh) has told me it is that at Punchestown so that should help him, as should the flatter track and if he returned to his early-season form he'd be the one to beat.

"The trip is probably on the sharp side for Natal but a right-handed track is perfect for him.

"He's probably relatively fresh as he missed Cheltenham and didn't get very far at Aintree in the Topham. I could certainly see him running into a place."

Dessie Hughes expects Schindlers Hunt to put up a bold show.

"He couldn't be better. He won well the last day at Fairyhouse and is in good form," said the trainer.

"We expect a big run from him and he has a good chance."

Gemini Lucy will be making her final racecourse appearance before she goes to the paddocks and she has a bit to find after finishing fourth behind Schindlers Hunt last time.

"It's her last run before she goes to stud to be covered by Presenting," said trainer Jessica Harrington.

"She's in good form and we are very fond of her."

The last two winners of the race, Newmill and Mansony, Philip Hobbs' Fair Along, Don't Be Bitin and Coolgreany complete the field.

Kerrygold Champion Chase; Cashmans bet: 2-1 Twist Magic, 7-2 Schindlers Hunt, 4-1 Fair Along, Mansony, 9-1 Natal, 14-1 Gemini Lucy, 20-1 Newmill, 25-1 Don't Be Bitin, 33-1 Coolgreaney.
