The Teachers Union of Ireland is holding a special union congress today to discuss its stance on the new social partnership deal.

The union's executive has already decided to recommend rejection of the Towards 2016 deal in response to what it believes are insufficient pay rises and a lack of commitment to provide extra resources to education.

Delegates at the meeting will decide today whether to back this view before the TUI's 13,000 members hold a postal ballot on the agreement.

The outcome of that postal ballot will decide whether the TUI votes for or against the deal at a special ICTU congress in September.
