Gervais to turn down invite to front third Golden Globes

Ricky Gervais has been invited back to host the Golden Globes a third time.

The British funnyman has revealed that despite his controversial routine at last month’s show - which saw him poke fun at Robert Downey Jr. and Ashton Kutcher among others – organisers would love for him to preside over next year’s ceremony, but he plans to turn down the offer.

He said: “The ratings went up again, and the organisers asked me to consider a third year. I don’t think I should. I don’t know what I could do better. I certainly couldn’t get more press for them, that’s for sure. You know me. Two seasons is enough.”

Despite complaints about his hosting of the show – including by organisers the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), who branded his remarks "unacceptable" – Gervais, 49, doesn’t think he went too far with his jokes and can’t believe the outcry he caused.

He added to heat magazine: “I did exactly what I went to do: improve on last year’s and have a laugh. The response was staggering. It was discussed on every news channel and chat show for weeks.

“The weird thing is, the question is always, ‘Did Ricky go too far?’ And the answer is always, ‘No’. I have yet to find anyone who was actually offended by it.”
