UEFA awaits referee's report on racism
UEFA will await reports from the referee and match delegates before deciding whether to take action following Inter Milan’s clash with Newcastle last night.
Newcastle defender Titus Bramble was subjected to racist abuse from supporters during the 2-2 draw at the San Siro.
A lit flare was also thrown into the Newcastle supporters’ section of the ground at one point.
UEFA recently promised a clampdown on racist supporters following a number of incidents involving English clubs earlier this season.
Fulham’s UEFA Cup match against Hadjuk Split in Croatia and Ipswich’s encounter with Sartid in Yugoslavia in the same competition were both marred by racist incidents.
Thierry Henry and Emile Heskey were also subjected to taunts in Champions League encounters for Arsenal and Liverpool against PSV Eindhoven and Valencia respectively.
There were also well documented problems during England’s Euro 2004 qualifier in Slovakia last year. The Slovakian FA were fined and ordered to play a game behind closed doors.
Inter have had a problem with crowd trouble in recent seasons. Two years ago they were fined and ordered to play away from the San Siro after disturbances following a UEFA Cup defeat by Alaves.
