The Irish Blood Transfusion Service is to have its security systems examined today.

The move follows revelations that the encrypted files of more than 170,000 Irish blood donors have been stolen at knifepoint during a mugging in New York.

The data had been sent to the US as part of a software upgrade.

An official from the office of the Data Protection Commissioner is due to visit the IBTS today to review its security procedures.
