A man has died after suffering a suspected heart attack on Croagh Patrick this afternoon.

The man, who is understood to have been in his sixties, was near the summit of the mountain in Co Mayo when he was taken ill.

He was airlifted to Mayo General Hospital but passed away shortly afterwards.

Dick Harnedy said others at the scene tried to help the man.

"We got a call-out at about 11.45am that a man had chest pains and that he needed help," he said. "He was actually at the top of the summit. Some people took him into the church. They called the mountain rescue, (who) decided to call the coastguard helicopter."
