Unions warn Cowen over levy anger

Union representatives have told the Taoiseach that there is widespread anger over the proposed 1% levy on all employees’ income.

Union representatives have told the Taoiseach that there is widespread anger over the proposed 1% levy on all employees’ income.

ICTU and SIPTU have held talks with Brian Cowen over concerns about measures announced in this week's Budget.

The Unions say they are concerned that the levy ends the long standing public policy of excluding the lowest paid from the tax net.

Following the meeting, SIPTU President Jack O'Connor said the Taoiseach was made fully aware of the concerns of employees around the country.
