Phase One of a groundbreaking European Commission web-services research project called ACE-GIS, undertaken by a consortium of seven that includes e-blana enterprise group, recently reached a successful conclusion.
The ACE-GIS project aims to provide better and more efficient tools for the development, deployment, discovery and composability of distributed web-services.
It places special emphasis on the key combination of geographical information and e-commerce services.
The project will have two further phases of nine months duration before completion in September 2004.
The project falls under the Fifth Framework, Information Society Technologies Programme, and was the subject of €2.06m in EU funding.
The acronym ACE-GIS refers to 'adaptable and composable e-commerce and geographic information services'.
The ACE-GIS consortium includes member companies and institutions from Norway, Portugal, Belgium, Germany, Ireland and Spain.
e-blana is leading two separate 'work packages' within the project.
The first draws on e-blana's expertise in e-commerce services, and involves the development of an e-payment and security infrastructure as well as an exploration of the composability possible between UDDI and ebXML registries.
e-blana's second work package is a pilot case application, or 'demonstrator', that validates and demonstrates the tools and methodologies being delivered by other members of the ACE-GIS consortium.
A second Pilot Demonstrator concerning environmental planning is being developed by another consortium member.
e-blana has previously been involved in several European Commission-funded research projects, leading to the development and e-blana’s subsequent commercialisation of the Eurovet livestock traceability system.
Founded in 1988, e-blana currently employs a combined staff of 65 at its headquarters in Dublin and its shares services centre in Armagh.
