The housing organisation Threshold has called on the Government to increase rent supplements in next month's budget to reflect the real cost of rented accommodation.

The organisation has also called for the reversal of restrictions on the rent supplement scheme introduced last year.

Threshold claimed the restrictions are leaving many people at increased risk of poverty and homeless.

Threshold director Patrick Burke said: "We're reminding the minister today that behind every cut there is a human story and a human tragedy and we're asking him to bring confidence back into the social welfare system in Ireland by looking after the most vulnerable."
