Vladimir Putin has been visiting Boris Yeltsin in his country home outside Moscow, a day after he was released from hospital.

Yeltsin was admitted to hospital just before his 70th birthday in late January and treated for pneumonia. His release was repeatedly delayed, prompting speculation that his condition had turned sharply for the worse.

The former President was sent home on Sunday and Russia's private NTV television has now showed footage of him smiling and resting in an armchair in his residence west of Moscow.

Putin visited him today before meeting Iranian President Mohammad Khatami in the Kremlin.
